New Year - Career goals

I am using all my focus to start university next year, so I can enlarge my career options and learn more about art. I have studied as an actress and that was all I ever thought of doing, but working at a Gallery this year showed me an option I had never thought about before: working within the art world.
In order to start university next year I have to complete 3 A levels in six months:  Literature, Ancient History and History. I have made a study calender and everything is going well, besides the stress that the time pressure is putting on me.
Nevertheless I keep thinking if this is the right choice:  I think that studying at a degree level will  develop my writing skills and my knowledge about art history. But I can´t ignore the fact that after my degree I will be indebted and that I will have committed 3 years of my life to an History of Art course in London. This makes me feel confused about many things.  Is university as important as I think it is? Will it give me knowledge I wouldn´t acquire by myself? Will it help me with my goal of working as a curator or art auctioneer or will it just create a huge amount of debt which afterwords will chain me to the necessity of paying for my university course?
I have read a lot about career paths and inspirational stories. I think that you can create your own career in relation to your personality and dreams, and a degree seems to be the obvious way to do it. But my main question still is: Is university really important? Are there other ways to do things? Let me know your experience and what you think about this.
